Nicada Digital has built and looked after more than 800 websites since 2014, almost all of them on WordPress. Hosting is the part clients never see and always feel.

Most small business owners choose hosting once, quickly, and never think about it again until something goes wrong. Then they find out what they actually bought: how long support takes to answer, whether there is a backup, and what the bill looks like in year two.

We look after websites for a living, so we see the after-effects of hosting choices every week. Here is what we would recommend.

Our affiliate links

We are affiliates for WPX and SiteGround, our top two picks, and earn a commission if you buy through our links. We are not affiliates for the others. Prices were checked on each company's own site on 1 October 2026.

What a Small Business Actually Needs

  1. Help that turns up fast. When the site is down, you need a person, not a ticket answered on Monday.
  2. Daily backups you can restore in one click.
  3. Security, and someone to clean up if you are hacked. Most hacks come through out-of-date plugins, and clean-up firms charge hundreds.
  4. Email at your own domain. you@yourbusiness.co.uk looks more trustworthy than a Gmail address.
  5. A price you can live with in year two. Not just the first-year offer.

Speed matters too, but any of the hosts below is fast enough for a normal business site. These five are what separate them.

1. WPX Business: Best Overall

WPX ticks all five boxes, which is rare.

  • Support: 24/7 live chat that WPX says answers in about 30 seconds on average, with a 4.7 out of 5 Trustpilot score from more than 3,600 reviews.
  • Backups: daily, kept for 28 days.
  • Security: daily malware scans and free clean-up if you are hacked.
  • Email: unlimited mailboxes at your own domain on the Business plan.
  • Price: $24.99 a month paid yearly, and it does not jump in year two. WPX say they do not charge VAT to UK customers.

It also holds up to five sites, moves your current site across for free, and was Top Tier in every WordPress price band it entered in the independent 2026 Review Signal tests. The downsides: no phone support, and prices are in US dollars. See our WPX review.

Our pick for small businesses: WPX Business

Five sites, email at your domain, malware clean-up, daily backups and the site move done for you. Two months free when you pay yearly, and 30 days to change your mind.

2. SiteGround GrowBig: Best for Phone Support and AI

SiteGround is the one to choose if you want to pick up the phone. Its in-house team answers by phone, chat or ticket 24/7, and it scores 4.9 out of 5 on Trustpilot from more than 30,000 reviews.

  • Unlimited sites, 50GB storage, staging and on-demand backups on GrowBig.
  • Daily backups kept for 30 days, a free domain and email on every plan. All mailboxes share 10GB, so busy email users may prefer Google Workspace.
  • Free AI tools, including an AI agent that can update your WordPress site when you ask in plain English.
  • A London data centre and ten others worldwide.

The catch is the renewal: £3.99 a month in year one, then £23.99 before VAT. Malware clean-up is also a paid extra. See our SiteGround review.

Prefer to phone someone? SiteGround GrowBig

Phone support any time, unlimited sites, staging, a free domain and free AI tools. £3.99 a month for year one.

Put the renewal date in your diary. The price goes up after the first term.

3. Krystal: Best UK Budget Option

Krystal is UK-owned with London servers. Its entry WordPress plan is £7 a month including VAT, with unlimited mailboxes, daily backups, weekday phone support and a 60-day money-back guarantee. A good fit for a single small site on a tight budget. We are not a Krystal affiliate.

4. Hostinger: Lowest Cost

Hostinger is the cheapest of the well-known hosts, but the headline price needs 48 months paid up front, its entry plan backs up weekly, and support starts with an AI agent. Fine for a business on a very tight budget that is happy to commit. See SiteGround vs Hostinger.

Which Should You Choose?

  • Want it to just work, and plan to stay for years: WPX Business.
  • Want to phone a person, or want AI tools: SiteGround GrowBig.
  • One small site, UK, tightest budget: Krystal.

Still deciding? Our WPX vs SiteGround comparison goes through the top two side by side, and the best WordPress hosting for UK sites covers more UK options.

Or Let Us Handle It

If you would rather not think about hosting at all, our website care plans include hosting, updates, backups and fixes for one monthly fee.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best WordPress hosting for a small business?

For most small businesses we recommend WPX's Business plan: up to five sites, email at your own domain with unlimited mailboxes, free site moves, malware removal included, and Top Tier results in the 2026 independent speed tests. If you want phone support or AI tools, SiteGround's GrowBig plan is the best alternative.

How much should a small business pay for WordPress hosting?

Roughly £15 to £30 a month for good managed hosting once any first-year discount ends. Hosting that costs £2 or £3 a month in year one usually renews at four to seven times that, so compare the year-two price.

Do I need managed WordPress hosting?

If your website brings in enquiries or sales, it is usually worth it. Managed hosting handles backups, security and server updates for you, and its support team knows WordPress. Cheap shared hosting leaves more of that to you.

Should my hosting include email?

It saves money if it does. Google and Microsoft charge per person, per month. WPX's Business plan includes unlimited mailboxes at your domain, and SiteGround includes email on every plan.

Can I move my existing site to a new host?

Yes. WPX moves sites for you free of charge, usually within 24 hours, and SiteGround includes free site migrations. Your old site stays live until you point your domain at the new host.

Move Your Site Without Lifting a Finger

Pick a plan, fill in WPX's move form, and their team copies your site across for you, usually within a day. If it is not right, you have 30 days to get your money back.
