Nicada Digital has built and supported more than 800 websites since 2014, across small business, ecommerce and agency projects. We judge builders on what they are like to live with, not just to launch.
Every website builder now claims to be an AI website builder. Most of them have bolted a text-to-layout feature onto the same product they were selling in 2022. A few have genuinely rebuilt around it. This guide sorts one from the other.
We are a web design agency. We build sites for clients and then look after them for years, which shapes what we look for: not how impressive the first draft is, but what the thing is like to own. That leads to some unfashionable conclusions below, including one section arguing that you should not use an AI builder at all.
The short answer
Professional services business? B12. Nothing else bundles intake, scheduling, invoicing and contracts with the site.
Want to keep designing after generation? Wix.
Design-led project, small site? Framer.
Need to own it and win search traffic? Not an AI builder — see Divi vs AI website builders.
How We Ranked These
Five questions, in the order they actually bite:
- What does the first draft look like? Is it a real site or a shape?
- Can the owner maintain it? The commonest failure of a small business site is neglect, not bad design.
- What does it cost over three years? Not month one.
- How far can it take you? Where is the ceiling on search, commerce and customisation?
- Can you leave? And what does leaving cost?
1. B12 — Best for Professional Services
From $0 · paid plans from $24/mo · try it free
B12 wins this list on a technicality that turns out to matter more than the AI: it is not really selling you a website. It is selling a professional-services business in one subscription — the site, plus client intake, appointment scheduling, invoicing and payments, a contact manager, email marketing, and contracts with eSignature.
For a consultant, coach, therapist, accountant or solo law practice, that list is most of the software they were about to go and buy separately. Priced individually, a scheduling tool plus an eSignature tool plus email marketing plus a CRM comfortably exceeds B12's $78/mo Client Engagement plan before you have paid for a website at all.
The generation itself is quick — about two minutes from prompt to a complete draft — and the AI agent means the owner can keep the site current by typing "change the opening hours" rather than booking time with a web person. That is genuinely the difference between a site that stays useful and one that quietly rots.
The trade-offs: you rent it rather than own it, so the site cannot be exported, and the design is competent rather than distinctive. Neither is unusual for a hosted builder, and neither matters much to the business B12 is built for. The full B12 review goes through all of it, and the pricing guide has every plan.
Choose B12 if: you run a service business where the work is bookings, invoices and contracts, and you would rather have one login than five.
2. Wix (with ADI) — Best for Staying in Control of the Design
Wix's AI asks about your business and generates a site, but the reason to pick Wix is what happens next: you drop into the full Wix editor, which remains the most capable drag-and-drop builder in this category, with a large app market behind it.
Where it falls down: the same lock-in problem as everything hosted, plus a pricing structure that climbs steeply once you want commerce or serious features. Wix sites are also harder to make genuinely fast than the marketing suggests.
Choose Wix if: you want AI to do the first 70% and you want to do the last 30% yourself, by hand. Our B12 vs Wix comparison goes deeper, and Divi vs Wix covers the ownership question.
3. Framer — Best for Design-Led Sites
Framer produces the best-looking output in this category by a clear margin, and its AI generation is good at turning a description into something with actual visual character rather than the usual generated sameness.
Where it falls down: it is a design tool first, so the business side — commerce, CRM, invoicing — is thin or absent. The ecosystem is smaller and younger than WordPress or Wix, which is a real consideration for a site you expect to run for a decade.
Choose Framer if: the site is a portfolio, a product page or a small brand site, and how it looks is the point.
4. Squarespace — Best for Polish Without Thinking About It
Squarespace's AI features are less ambitious than B12's, but its template quality has always been its argument and still is. It is very hard to make a Squarespace site look bad, which is not true of the others here.
Where it falls down: limited flexibility once you want something the template did not anticipate, and modest business tooling next to B12. See B12 vs Squarespace for the head-to-head.
Choose Squarespace if: design matters, business tooling does not, and you want to make as few decisions as possible.
5. Hostinger AI Builder — Best on Price Alone
The cheapest realistic way to get an AI-generated site on your own domain. Introductory pricing is very low.
Where it falls down: renewal prices rise substantially after the introductory term, the AI output is basic next to B12 or Framer, and the builder is Hostinger's own proprietary system rather than WordPress — so the usual lock-in applies without the usual polish.
Choose Hostinger if: budget is the binding constraint and you accept you will get what you pay for.
6. 10Web — Best AI Route Into WordPress
10Web generates WordPress sites, which in principle gives you the portability the others lack. In practice the site is built with 10Web's own builder and hosted in their managed environment, so you get some of WordPress's openness with an extra layer of dependency on top.
Choose 10Web if: you specifically want WordPress underneath and you want AI to do the first draft. If you want WordPress without the extra layer, build it with Divi instead.

When an AI Builder Is the Wrong Tool
This is the section the rest of the internet leaves out, so here it is plainly. Do not use an AI website builder if any of these describe you:
- Search traffic is central to your plan. Every hosted builder has a ceiling on technical SEO control. If you intend to compete for commercial keywords, publish real content volume, or manage a large site architecture, you will hit that ceiling and be stuck.
- You are selling at scale. Serious ecommerce needs WooCommerce or Shopify, not a generated site with a store bolted on.
- Your brand has to be distinctive. Generated design converges on the competent average. In a crowded market that is a disadvantage, not a neutral.
- You cannot afford to rebuild in three years. Everything hosted is rented. If the switching cost would be painful later, pay the ownership cost now.
In all four cases the answer is self-hosted WordPress — either built by you with Divi, or built for you. We argue that case properly in Divi vs AI website builders.
Our Recommendation
For the businesses that actually ask us this question — solo professionals and small service firms who need a site live soon and do not want to become part-time webmasters — B12 is the pick, because it solves the whole problem rather than just the website-shaped part of it.
Not sure yet? Take the $1 week — seven days on a full paid plan with your own domain, so you are judging the real product rather than a capped free tier. Set a reminder for day six. Already decided? Skip the trial and choose yearly billing on the same page, which saves 15%.

Reading this from outside the US?
B12 is a US platform — the pricing is in dollars and the invoicing and contract tools are built around US practice. Everything above still applies, but if you are in the UK there are two routes that fit better.
