Nicada Digital has built and supported more than 800 websites since 2014, across small business, ecommerce and agency projects. We judge builders on what they are like to live with, not just to launch.
Short answer: ChatGPT can write a website. It cannot give you one.
Ask it for a homepage for a physiotherapy clinic and within a minute you will have a tidy block of HTML and CSS that looks surprisingly professional in the preview. It is a genuinely impressive trick, and it is why "just use ChatGPT" has become common advice.
The trouble starts about ten minutes later, when you try to turn that code into something a customer can actually visit. We build and look after websites for a living — more than 800 since 2014 — and the gap between "the code exists" and "the business has a working website" is where most DIY attempts stall.
The short version
Use ChatGPT for: drafting your words, brainstorming page structure, writing FAQs, learning how websites work.
Do not use it for: the website itself, if you are a business owner who wants to be taking enquiries next week rather than debugging hosting. Use an AI website builder that generates the site and runs it — for service businesses, we recommend B12.
What ChatGPT Genuinely Does Well
- Writing code fast. A clean, responsive landing page in seconds. For developers, it is a real accelerator.
- Drafting content. Service descriptions, about pages, FAQs, meta descriptions. This is where it helps a business owner most.
- Explaining things. What a domain is, how DNS works, why your site needs SSL. It is a patient tutor.
- Fixing small problems. Paste in a broken bit of CSS and it will usually tell you why.
Where It Leaves You Stuck
Here is what happens after ChatGPT hands you the code. Every one of these is a job it does not do for you.
| What a business website needs | ChatGPT | An AI website builder |
|---|---|---|
| Page design and code | Yes | Yes |
| Hosting — somewhere the site lives | No, you arrange it | Included |
| Your own domain name | No, you buy and connect it | Included (first year free on B12) |
| SSL certificate (the padlock) | No | Included |
| A contact form that actually sends | No — needs a backend | Included |
| Editing without touching code | No | Yes |
| Mobile testing, speed, sitemap | Only if you know to ask | Handled |
| Security updates and backups | No | Handled |
| Booking, invoicing, client intake | No | Built in on B12 |
None of these is impossible. A developer would knock them off in an afternoon. But if you were a developer, you would not be searching whether ChatGPT can build a website.
The part nobody mentions: month three
The real cost of a hand-rolled site is not launch day. It is the first time you need to change your opening hours, add a new service, or swap a photo. With a ChatGPT-built site, that means opening code files, finding the right line, and re-uploading — or going back to ChatGPT, pasting in the whole page, and hoping the new version does not quietly break something else.
In our experience, sites that are awkward to update stop being updated. Then they start costing you enquiries.
The Better Way to Use AI: Let It Build and Run the Site
The useful idea behind "build it with ChatGPT" is right: describe your business in plain English and let AI do the heavy lifting. The missing piece is a platform that takes what the AI generates and turns it into a working, hosted, editable site.
That is what an AI website builder is. For a professional service business — consultants, coaches, therapists, accountants, trades — the one we recommend is B12:
- You describe the business, it builds the site. B12 puts the figure at about two minutes to a complete first draft.
- You edit it the ChatGPT way. Type "add a pricing page" or "change the opening hours to 8 to 6" and its AI agent makes the change. No code.
- It is live, hosted and on your own domain on any paid plan, with SSL and backups handled.
- It runs the business side too. Client intake, scheduling, invoicing and payments, contracts with eSignature, and email marketing on the Client Engagement plan.
In other words, it keeps the part of ChatGPT that is genuinely useful — talking to it in plain English — and removes the parts that leave you stuck. B12 also says it runs the most popular website-builder GPT inside ChatGPT itself, so if you start there you end up in the same place.
Skip the code. Get the website.
Describe your business and B12 builds the site, hosts it and puts it on your own domain. A dollar gets you seven days on a full paid plan to see what it makes.

Reading this from outside the US?
B12 is a US platform — the pricing is in dollars and the invoicing and contract tools are built around US practice. Everything above still applies, but if you are in the UK there are two routes that fit better.

When ChatGPT Is the Right Tool
To be fair to it, there are cases where building with ChatGPT makes sense:
- You can code, or want to learn. It is a superb teacher and a fast assistant.
- It is a one-page personal project that will never need updating.
- You are prototyping a layout to show a designer what you have in mind.
If you are a business owner who wants enquiries, none of those is you.
How to Use ChatGPT and an AI Builder Together
The best results we see come from using each tool for what it is good at:
- Use ChatGPT to think. Ask it what pages a business like yours needs, what questions customers ask, and how competitors describe their services.
- Use it to draft. Get first drafts of your service descriptions and FAQs. Then rewrite them in your own voice — generic AI copy is easy to spot.
- Use an AI builder to build. Give B12 a description of your business and paste in the content you have refined.
- Edit by talking. Make changes through the builder's AI agent, so the site stays current without you ever opening a code file.
How We Assessed This
This page is based on how ChatGPT and AI website builders work, B12's published features and pricing, and more than a decade of building and maintaining business websites. We have not built a client site on B12 — we build on self-hosted WordPress — so where we describe B12's behaviour, we are reporting what B12 documents. Prices were checked against B12's pricing page in September 2026.
