Nicada Digital has built and supported more than 800 websites since 2014, across small business, ecommerce and agency projects. We judge builders on what they are like to live with, not just to launch.
We should declare our hand before anything else. We are a web design agency that has built more than 800 websites since 2014, and almost all of them are WordPress sites built with Divi. We also earn a commission if you buy either product through the links on this page. You should read what follows knowing both of those things.
Given that, you might expect this page to conclude "Divi, obviously". It does not. For most of the people actually asking this question — a solo professional who wants to be taking bookings next week, not learning a page builder — B12 is the better answer, and we would rather say so than lose your trust defending our own habits.
The one-line answer
Choose B12 if you want a working business online in days — site, bookings, invoices and contracts together — and you would rather spend your time on clients than on a website.
Choose Divi if search traffic matters, the site will matter for years, and owning the thing you have built is worth some effort.
They Are Not Really the Same Kind of Product
Worth being clear about this, because the comparison confuses people.
B12 is a complete hosted platform. Hosting, site, AI editor, client intake, scheduling, invoicing, contracts, CRM and email marketing, all in one subscription, all managed for you. You never touch a server.
Divi is a theme and visual builder for WordPress. You supply the hosting and the WordPress install; Divi gives you the design tools. Scheduling, invoicing and CRM come from plugins you choose. Nothing is managed for you, and everything is yours.
So the real question is not "which is better software". It is "do I want a finished system I rent, or a set of parts I own".
Head to Head
| B12 | WordPress + Divi | |
|---|---|---|
| What you get | A finished, hosted system | Tools to build what you want |
| Time to live site | Same day | A weekend to a few weeks |
| Cost, year one | $240–$804 | About $350 |
| Cost over five years | $1,200–$4,020 | About $950 |
| Number of sites covered | 10–30 projects by plan | Unlimited, one licence |
| You own the files | No | Yes, all of them |
| Can you change host | No | Yes, any time |
| Design control | Guided, good | Pixel-level, unlimited |
| SEO ceiling | Adequate | Excellent |
| Intake, booking, invoicing | Included | Plugins, your choice |
| Who handles updates | B12 | You, or a care plan |
| Technical skill needed | None | Some, and growing |
| Refunds | None, per B12's terms | 30-day money-back |
Cost: Divi Wins, and It Is Not Subtle
The Divi figure assumes the $249 one-off lifetime licence plus roughly $100 a year of decent hosting. The B12 range spans its $20/mo Website plan and its $67/mo Client Engagement plan, both paid yearly.
| Year 1 | Year 3 | Year 5 | |
|---|---|---|---|
| WordPress + Divi lifetime | ~$350 | ~$650 | ~$950 |
| B12 Website (yearly) | $240 | $720 | $1,200 |
| B12 Website + Client Engagement (yearly) | $804 | $2,412 | $4,020 |
| B12 Professional (expert built) | $2,388 | $7,164 | $11,940 |
Two honest caveats before you read too much into that.
First, the Divi row assumes you do the work. Your time is not free, and if building the site costs you three weekends you would rather have spent earning, B12 may be cheaper in the only currency that matters.
Second, the $804 B12 row includes scheduling, invoicing, contracts, CRM and email marketing. To match that on WordPress you would add plugins, some of which are also subscriptions. The gap is real but it is narrower than the table alone suggests — call it a clear win rather than a rout.
Speed: B12, Comfortably
B12 gives you a complete draft in about two minutes and a live site on your own domain the same day. Divi means picking hosting, installing WordPress, installing Divi, learning the builder, and building the thing. Realistically that is a weekend for someone capable and a few weeks for someone learning.
Do not dismiss this. A working site that exists today earns more than an excellent site that is still "nearly ready" in April. If you have no website at all right now, speed is worth more than almost anything else on this page — and it is the clearest single reason B12 wins for a lot of businesses.
Ownership: Divi, and This Is the Point
This is the argument that actually decides it for most businesses that think about it properly.
With Divi on self-hosted WordPress, the site is a set of files and a database that belong to you. You can move host, hand it to another developer, export it, back it up, or keep it running for fifteen years. Nobody can change the terms.
With B12 you are renting a system. Your pages live in B12's format on B12's servers. You cannot export the site. If B12 changes its pricing, or its features, or its direction, your options are to accept it or rebuild elsewhere.
That is not a reason to avoid B12 — people rent premises and it works out fine, and you are buying the fact that hosting, updates, security and backups are somebody else's problem. It is just worth being deliberate about. The one scenario to think through is the good outcome: the site works, traffic grows, and in year three you want something the platform will not do. Switching then means a rebuild.
Search: Divi, By a Wide Margin
If you intend to compete for search traffic, this section is the whole decision.
WordPress gives you total control over site architecture, URL structure, redirects, schema, internal linking, page speed and Core Web Vitals, plus the entire ecosystem of SEO tooling. Divi 5 outputs clean, semantic HTML and works properly with Yoast and Rank Math. There is effectively no ceiling — if you can outwork your competitors, you can outrank them.
B12 handles the basics competently and then stops. For a local practice found by name and a few local terms, that is genuinely enough. For a business whose growth plan is organic traffic, it is not, and no amount of good content will lift a platform ceiling.
Our Divi SEO guide covers what that control actually buys you in practice.
Business Tools: B12
Divi is a design tool. It does not do intake, scheduling, invoicing, contracts or CRM, and it does not pretend to. You add those with WordPress plugins — more flexible and usually cheaper on paper, but also five more decisions, five more things to configure, five more subscriptions to track and five more things to keep updated. Plenty of people never get round to it, and then the site is just a brochure.
B12 makes those decisions for you and they work together out of the box. If you want a business running rather than a website built, that is worth real money.
Who Should Choose Which
B12 is the better choice if…
- You have no site and need one now
- Customers come from referral, not search
- You want intake, booking and invoicing bundled
- You have no interest in learning WordPress
- Predictable monthly cost suits you better than up-front
Divi is the better choice if…
- Search traffic is part of the plan
- You want to own the site outright
- You will build more than one website
- The site needs a distinctive design
- You are thinking in years, not months
The Third Answer
Plenty of people reading this want what Divi gives them — an owned site, built properly, that can compete in search — without the weekends, the learning curve or the responsibility for updates.
That is what an agency is for. We build WordPress sites you own outright, with the copy written for you and the search foundations done properly, from £995, and we look after them afterwards on a care plan so the maintenance is not your problem either. See the package prices, or if you are genuinely undecided, take the 60-second quiz.
