Search for a free AI website builder and you will find dozens, all promising a complete site in minutes for nothing. Most of them deliver on the first part. The small print is always in the same place: free means a subdomain and someone else's ads.
That is not a scam — it is how the model works, and a free plan is a perfectly good way to try before you buy. You just need to know where the line is, so you do not spend a weekend building on a plan you will have to leave the moment you want to look professional.
The short answer
Best free AI website builder for a service business: B12. The free plan runs the same AI generator as the paid plans, so you see a real draft of your own site before spending anything.
The catch everywhere: your own domain costs money on every builder. Build free, then pay only when the site is worth putting your name on.
What "Free" Actually Gets You
| Free plan | B12 | Wix | Google Sites | WordPress.com |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AI generates the site | Yes, full draft | Yes | No | Limited |
| Your own domain | No | No | Yes (bring your own) | No |
| Builder's ads shown | Yes | Yes | No | Yes |
| Booking / invoicing | On paid plans | Paid apps | No | Paid plugins |
| Edit by typing instructions | Yes | Partly | No | No |
| Best for | Service businesses | Design-led sites | Internal or personal | Blogs |
Competitor plans change often — check each one's current terms before you decide. B12's plan details were checked against its pricing page in September 2026.
1. B12 — Best Free AI Website Builder for Service Businesses
B12's free plan is more useful than most because it is not a cut-down generator. You describe your business and it builds a full draft site — pages, layout, copy, images — which B12 says takes about two minutes. You are looking at your actual site, not a template with your name dropped in.
Free plan includes: a mobile-responsive site on a yourbusiness.b12sites.com subdomain, the visual editor with AI chat, team invites, and 5 AI credits a day up to 30 a month.
The catch: no custom domain, and B12 shows its own ads on free sites. For a business that customers are sizing up, that is a real limitation.
The cheap way past it: new customers can take a full paid plan for $1 for the first 7 days — your own domain, the business tools, 100+ AI credits. After that it is $24 a month, or $20 a month billed yearly. It renews at the normal price and B12 do not issue refunds, so set a reminder for day six if you are still deciding.

Reading this from outside the US?
B12 is a US platform — the pricing is in dollars and the invoicing and contract tools are built around US practice. Everything above still applies, but if you are in the UK there are two routes that fit better.
The Divi link is an affiliate link. We earn a commission if you buy, at no extra cost to you.
2. Wix — Best Free Plan for Design Control
Wix's AI asks about your business and generates a starting site, then drops you into the full Wix editor. If you want to spend time on how the site looks, the free plan gives you a lot to play with. Free sites carry Wix branding and sit on a Wix subdomain, and business features such as bookings are paid add-ons. We compare the two properly in B12 vs Wix.
3. Google Sites — Genuinely Free, Genuinely Basic
Google Sites is free, has no ads, and lets you connect a domain you already own. It is also very limited: no AI generation, basic templates, no booking or payments, and not built for winning customers from search. Useful for an internal page or a simple personal site; underpowered for a business.
4. WordPress.com — Free for Blogging
The free WordPress.com plan is fine for a blog. For a business site it is restrictive — no custom domain, ads shown, and most of what makes WordPress powerful sits behind paid plans. Self-hosted WordPress is a different, far more capable thing; see B12 vs Divi for that comparison.
How to Go From Free to Professional Without Wasting Money
- Build on a free plan first. Look at what the AI actually makes for your business. It costs nothing.
- If you like it but are not sure, take a trial. On B12, $1 buys a week on the full product with your own domain.
- If you are sure, skip the trial and pay yearly. On B12 that is 15% cheaper, and you are not relying on remembering a renewal date.
- Move to your own domain before you share the site. A subdomain costs you trust with every visitor.
When Free Is the Wrong Place to Start
If your business depends on search traffic, needs a distinctive brand, or you want to own and move your site in future, a hosted free plan is the wrong foundation whatever the price. That is where a self-hosted WordPress site — built yourself or built for you — earns its extra cost.
How We Assessed This
Based on each builder's published plans and features and our experience building and maintaining business websites since 2014. We have not built a client site on B12, so we report what B12 documents rather than a hands-on build. B12's pricing was checked in September 2026; competitor plans are indicative.
