Nicada Digital has built and supported more than 800 websites since 2014, across small business, ecommerce and agency projects. We judge builders on what they are like to live with, not just to launch.
Most "best website builder for small business" lists rank builders against each other as if every small business wanted the same thing. They do not. A therapist, a café and a roofer have almost nothing in common online, and the right builder for one is the wrong one for another.
So this list is organised by what kind of small business you run. We have built and maintained more than 800 small business websites since 2014, and the question that decides the right builder is almost always the same: what does your website actually have to do?
Quick answer by business type
Service business (consultant, coach, therapist, accountant, trade): B12
Design-led (studio, restaurant, photographer): Squarespace
Online shop: Shopify
Search-led or long-term asset: WordPress + Divi
1. B12 — Best for Service Businesses
Free plan · $1 for 7 days · from $24/mo ($20 yearly)
If your business runs on enquiries, appointments, invoices and agreements, B12 solves more of the problem than any other builder here. It is not really a website builder with extras bolted on — it is a small-business system with a website attached.
- AI builds the site. Describe the business and B12 generates a complete draft — about two minutes, by B12's own figure.
- Edit by talking. Type the change you want and its AI agent makes it. The main reason small business sites go stale is that updating them feels like a job; this removes most of that.
- The business tools are built in. On the Client Engagement plan ($78/mo, $67 yearly): client intake, appointment scheduling, invoicing and payments, contracts with eSignature, email marketing and a contact manager. Priced separately, those usually cost more than the plan.
Trade-offs: you rent it rather than own it, so the site cannot be exported; design is competent rather than distinctive; and it is the wrong tool if competitive search traffic is your growth plan. B12 also issues no refunds, so judge it on the free plan or the $1 week. Full detail in our B12 website builder review.
The small-business system, not just the website
A dollar gets you seven days on a full paid plan, your own domain included. Build your actual site and try the booking and invoicing before you commit.

Reading this from outside the US?
B12 is a US platform — the pricing is in dollars and the invoicing and contract tools are built around US practice. Everything above still applies, but if you are in the UK there are two routes that fit better.
The Divi link is an affiliate link. We earn a commission if you buy, at no extra cost to you.
2. Squarespace — Best for Design-Led Businesses
If customers choose you partly on how you look — photographers, studios, restaurants, boutiques — Squarespace's templates are the best in the mainstream market, and it is hard to make one look bad. Business tooling is thinner: scheduling is a paid add-on and invoicing and contracts need other tools. See B12 vs Squarespace.
3. Shopify — Best for Online Shops
If selling products online is the core of the business, use a platform built for it. Shopify handles catalogues, stock, payments, shipping and tax properly and scales as you grow. For a handful of products alongside a service business, it is overkill.
4. Wix — Best for Hands-On Design Control
Wix's AI generates a starting site and then gives you the most capable drag-and-drop editor in the category, with a large app market. Good if you want to design it yourself; business features come from paid apps. See B12 vs Wix or our Wix alternatives.
5. WordPress + Divi — Best for Search-Led Businesses and Long-Term Ownership
If search traffic is how you grow, or you want a site you own outright and can move anywhere, self-hosted WordPress with a visual builder like Divi gives you control no hosted builder can match. It takes more effort and you are responsible for updates. The trade is covered in B12 vs Divi.

How to Choose in Two Questions
- Do you take bookings, send invoices or sign agreements? If yes, start with B12 — it replaces the most separate software.
- Does your growth depend on ranking in Google? If yes, pick WordPress, whatever else you choose.
If neither applies, pick on design (Squarespace) or selling (Shopify). Still unsure? The 60-second website builder quiz will point you at one.
How We Assessed This
Based on each platform's published features and pricing and our experience building small business websites since 2014. We have not built a client site on B12, so we report what B12 documents. B12 pricing verified September 2026; other prices indicative.
